Ounce count is one of the most common terms in the commercial pistachio trade. It gives buyers a practical way to compare in-shell nut size before confirming a grade.
What does an ounce size mean?
The number refers to the approximate count of pistachios in one ounce, or 28.35 grams. A size such as 20/22 means that approximately 20 to 22 nuts make up that weight. Because fewer nuts are needed, a lower count generally indicates a larger pistachio.
A simple comparison
- 18/20: very large commercial size
- 20/22 and 22/24: large to medium-large presentation
- 26/28 and 28/30: medium commercial ranges
- 30/32 and 32/34: smaller, compact sizes
Not every variety is normally available across every ounce range. Akbari and Kalleh Ghouchi are commonly associated with larger counts, while Fandoghi is often supplied in higher ounce ranges because of its naturally compact form.
Why ounce count is not the whole grade
Size should be reviewed together with natural-open ratio, closed shell, semi-open nuts, moisture, shell color, damage and foreign material. Processing and final packaging can also change the suitability of a particular lot.
When requesting a quotation, include a preferred size and an acceptable alternative. This gives the supplier room to discuss current crop availability without losing the commercial objective.
